Using shoeboxes, children
are encouraged to create a safe place
that includes all the things they need
to be happy, healthy and safe. In the
next lesson, children are encouraged to
form groups. These become neighborhoods
that children form into safe communities.
Class discussion forms around what a
community needs in order to be happy,
healthy, and safe. Children are encouraged
to think about planning parks, schools,
zoos, lakes, streets, fire stations, ice
cream stores.
Careful thought ahead of time includes
the use of classroom space and movement
in the classroom. The art facilitator
needs to help solve problems such as maintaining
a feeling of community, addressing fears
of being left out of activities, and promoting
a healthy, safe and happy environment.
Communication skills are encouraged to
include all class members and promote
positive interactions.
